NASA Container Loading

Het gekozen model is de Verari Forest container, die voor dit project door ontwikkeld is met Cisco apparatuur. Zij hebben de eerste server apparatuur geleverd op basis van de Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS). Voor het opslag deel maakt men gebruik van een door SUN ontwikkelde opensource oplossing; de LUSTRE clustering file system. Deze is hardware leverancier onafhankelijk en bestaat uit 2U servers;

These are rack-dense, 2RU servers with 12 SATA drives in a RAID 6 configuration. They are equipped with 10GigE network ports. Our current configuration uses 1TB drives, for non-blocking access to 10TB of usable storage per server. This provides us with 4 CPU cores, and 5TB of usable storage, per rack unit, at non-blocking network speeds.

De reden om te kiezen voor containers in dit gehele model is naast de gunstige TCO voor containers, ook de flexibiliteit;

1. It would take other HW besides the manufacturer (Verari)
2. It was very dense and NASA wanted density (The container is 25 Petabytes of storage) for storage AND compute
3. Extremely efficent design – a traditional DC cant touch it
4. Portability. If prices changes or capacity is easier to deliver by moving one or loaning one, it’s easier and more cost effective than building or leasing short term space
5. The design is the same. Each container supports thousands of cores and 25 Petabytes so the scale is known, the config is the same, and so you have a true infrastructure platform to roll out anywhere.
